 Open College Network - ZZScanSystem

ZZScanSystem is a utility developed for the OCN by Sprezzatura which is the AREV equivalent of SCANDISK, in that it checks through all of your AREV files for problems and reports back on what it finds. It works by looking at every file on the system and storing results in a file called ZZSCANINFO. Once you have run ZZSCANSYSTEM you can look at the results again anytime.

To use ZZSCANSYSTEM firstly install the software by downloading this file then follow these steps :-

Please unzip these programs to C:\SCAN.

Go into Advanced Revelation and press F5.

At TCL type RUN DOS C:\SCAN\INSTALL and press enter.

Wait until it finishes and you are back at TCL (F5).

Installation is now complete

To run ZZSCANSYSTEM, go to TCL (press F5) and type ZZSCANSYSTEM and press enter.

A screen will appear like this

and after what may be a few hours (depending on how much data you have) you will see a screen like this

The four options provide you with different pieces of information about your files. The options are explained below.

Linear Hash Statistics

This screen shows you some complicated technical things about your AREV files. All you have to worry about is whether it says anything in the Gfes section. If it does you have problems so refer to the FAQs on this site for help in fixing them! To look at each file in turn either click on the arrows at the bottom or press Alt-F (forward) Alt-B (backward).

Dictionary Statistics

This screen shows you problems you may have with your dictionary files. As with all screens to look at each file in turn either click on the arrows at the bottom or press Alt-F (forward) Alt-B (backward).

The problems you may see here include

Item not found in %FIELDS%

Generally this is harmless but if it begins with anything other than @ (eg @CRT) then mail OCNSUPPORT with a screen dump (use Alt-PrtSc when in a Dos Window like above) then just paste the screen into word or your email editor.

XREF Flag Mismatch

This is technically an error but should not cause your problems so ignore.

Any other errors

Please screen dump and report

Indexing Statistics

This is going to reveal the most errors as most OCNs have historical index problems which have never been addressed. Expect to be appalled!

Errors you can expect to see include

!Filename Not Found in !FileName

This is a problem as it means when you are creating specific kinds of reports (ones which use indexes) you will get an "FS100 Record not found" error and the report will not work. The most common reason for this is that your workstations are not set up correctly to run AREV. You can look at this article to check your machines over. Also ensure you've turned off write behind caching.

The fix is to remove ALL indexes from the file then add them back in.

Volume Mismatch

This means that the indexes will not be updated correctly. Again the fix is to remove all indexes and read.

Any other errors

Please screen dump and report

Data Statistics

Some reporting errors are caused by invalid records in your files. Errors you can expect to see here include

Filename row RowId invalid key

These rows must be deleted to ensure accurate reporting. You should be able to do this by going to TCL and typing DELETE FILE ROWID. Please check that you mean to do this before doing so as SOME system files have invalid keys.

Filename has no dictionary

There are certain system files which don't have a dictionary so this can normally be ignored. If the file is not in this list, report it!

ACCESSIBLE_COLUMNS, CAPTURED, CONTACTS_TEMP, DUMPFIXANYTHING HERE, HELP, LISTS, OBJECT, SCALC_BP, SOURCE, SYSALIASES, SYSEMBEDDED, SYSHELP, SYSINCLUDE, SYSMENU, SYSNETWORKS, SYSOBJ, SYSTEMP, SYSTEMP1, SYSTEXT, SYSVIEWS, SYS_DBASE_BOND, SYS_QUERY_COLUMNS

ZZSCANSYSTEM_AREV

To look at the reports again at any time press F5 and type in ZZSCANSYSTEM_AREV and press <enter>.
