Reader's Clinic - Different Id Same Record

A London subscriber had a problem caused by a special user defined conversion. The analyst implementing the system decided to prevent spaces from being entered into the key by a user defined conversion replacing CHAR(32) with CHAR(0).

The strange effect was that when different keys were entered (EG P/L&S/11/1 and P/L&S/11/5 with the CHAR(0) not shown) they appeared separately on the browse list or in a list command, but altering one produced exactly the same alteration in the other. The system whilst acknowledging that the ids were different insisted that the records were the same!
